Introduction:
The most difficult task a parent has is to raise a healthy, happy child. The purpose is to work on the healthy children in this course. How do parents and care workers insure the healthy child? The parent can make strides to provide the healthiest opportunities for the child before conception. This happens through knowledge as to what happens during the prenatal period of development for the unborn. One needs to look at the terms that are associated with birth defects and identify the symptoms of birth defects.

Task:
Become acquainted with the terms for environmental and genetic birth defects by reading the text book pages on the board and doing a search in yahoo.com for the specific birth defect. Type in the birth defect name, click on the first selection of inside Yahoo! matches, and then read what the page says about the defect. Here is an example for rubella and cerebral palsy from a yahoo search. This is a good source to look up terms you are trying to understand that are medical/disease in nature. 1. Generate simple statements for term definitions and symptoms to go on your slide. 2. Be sure to look for graphic to go on your slide.

Here are two sites that offer free and font graphics:
Animationfactory.com
Fontsandgraphics.com

Or you can go to Google.com, click on the image tab, type in the type of graphic you'd like to use and there are many choices here.

Process:
1. Choose the birth defects you will cover in this project.
2. Look in the index of the text book for information about the defect. Use the Internet sites suggested to get two resources for your information. Decide what information will go into your slide for definitions and symptoms of the birth defect.
3. Choose graphics/photos to go on the page. Save these to the hard drive in the folder with your presentation.
4. Develop a slide for the presentation. Save your work. If you don't have enough disk room for the project, come and talk to the instructor.

Resources:
There are two text books used in this classroom and several supplemental books. These have some basic information. Use them first.

The instructor keeps files on birth defects, you may use these files. If you'd like to check them out, talk to Mrs. Brook. Use these with the text or other time when you are not on the computer.

Here are some resources for the Internet. First go through the web pages listed in the URL resource page. Some students do not look at these pages in depth and many of these pages are huge and have information to share when you can find it. Other pages:

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
Effects of Tobacco on Pregnancy                                                                                    Prenatal Diagnosis (Including Cystic Fibrosis)

Evaluation:
Your grade will be based on the rubric grade on the project, the presentation and student production during class time for each day. Here is the form for the rubric grade. The class will fill out these forms other student presentations.

Conclusion:
Through this part of the project, I hope you will think about the
different definitions and symptoms of the birth defects. Hopefully, this information will help you to develop better observation skills. Observation skills help when working with children and the human being.
