Courses

Graphic Design 1

Grades: 9-12
Prerequisites: None

In the Graphic Design class, students will apply technical knowledge and skills to plan, design, create, and evaluate digital media for a variety of print, video, animation, multimedia, and web-based projects. Students will learn to use professional graphic design software including: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Flash, and 3D Studio Max. Students will explore the history of design, education, and careers in the field of commercial art and related occupations.

Graphic Design 2

Grades: 10-12
Prerequisites: Graphic Design 1, or instructor approval

Second year design students will expand their abilities in animation software programs like 3D Studio Max and Toon Boom Studio  to create multimedia and animation sequences for video, web and DVD. Students will most often work with a partner/team to complete major projects. Emphasis is on learning to use the tools available as well as properly planning and creating visual stories. Students will explore the history of animation and careers in design.

Graphic Design Portfolio

Grades: 11-12
Prerequisites: instructor approval

Students will work to create a portfolio of designs based on the student’s individual career interests. This course may be repeated for credit. Students will select and use the appropriate tools/software for each project.

Applied Design 1 and Applied Design 2

Grades: 10-12
Prerequisite: Application/contract and instructor approval

Students in Applied Design take responsibility for creating the AJHS Prospector Yearbook from front to back cover. Students will also create a multimedia CD or DVD and a website to help market the yearbook. Students learn to write copy, design layouts, take photographs, and market the yearbook. Emphasis is on brainstorming the initial creative theme idea and following through with the writing, photography and design. Students will also explore leadership, job responsibility and team working skills while meeting real world deadlines.
